For retail businesses, location is really important. You need to be located in the type of space that will attract customers. This generally means you need to be in a high traffic area or in a mall.
However, once you’ve got the right location for your business, you also need to think about the way in which you’re going to present your business. Should you have a small store or a large one? Should you decorate it in a modern way or fill it with antiques? Should you go for a trendy look or a respectable, reliable look? The décor is as important as the location.
Even if you’re located somewhere where there’s a lot of people coming and going, that’s not going to help you unless your store has the type of appearance that attracts customers. So here are a few tips to help you do up your Chicago retail space:
You’re going to have a sign on the outside with the name of your store. However, there are times when people make this sign a little too small or too big. A good way to figure out if your store sign is the right size is to walk across the street and see if you’re able to read it clearly from there.
Generally, it’s ok to have a sign that’s a bit too big but not one that’s too small. You might also want to make sure that it’s in a bright color so that it looks attractive and clear.
These are, arguably, the best way to get customers into your store. Some businesses even hire people just to do up their display windows everyday. If you’re selling clothes, you need to have display windows with mannequins wearing attractive outfits. And this means that you need someone with a good fashion sense to do up your window.
Ever seen those mannequins which have no hair? Aren’t they a little disturbing? Make sure that your mannequins don’t look like ghosts.
You can also add background touches to display windows, making it look like your mannequins are engaged in doing something, like walking on the beach or taking in the changing autumn colors.
Arrangement of Items
Once you get the customer to walk into the store, you have to be able to keep them there. This means that you shouldn’t make your store too crowded. The customer should be able to walk around and look at all the merchandise.
Plus, you need to arrange things so that your really good items have pride of place. It doesn’t help to place items so high up that they are out of your customer’s reach. Only do this if you’re seriously short of space. And make sure that a salesperson is available at all times to help your customers get a hold of those items if need be.
