About Portland

“The City of Roses” is situated near the confluence of the Willamette and Columbia rivers. It is often referred to as the most environmentally friendly or “green” city in the US. Portland is known for strong land-use planning. Light rail has been highly supported in the city. Portlanders are into “liquid refreshment” with several microbreweries, micro distilleries, and premier coffee micro-roasteries and cafes. Portland’s largest employer is Intel, manufacturing computer components. The metro area is home to more than 1,000 technology companies, and often referred to as the “Silicon Forest”. The steel industry has thrived in this region since before World War II. Portland is the perfect climate for growing hopps and is the largest shipper of wheat in the US and the largest port for wheat in the world. It is home to one of the largest commercial dry docks in the country. The Port of Portland is the third largest in the US on the west coast, even though it is located some 80 miles upriver. As is true of most large cities, Portland has a large selection of performing arts institutions including: Ballet, Symphony, Orchestras, Opera, and off Broad-way type productions. One of the special events and festivals that happen in Portland is the Rose Festival each June. Portland has been acknowledged by the Food Network for being their “Delicious Destination of the Year” based on the growth of excellent restaurants within the city. In sports, Portland is home to the Trail Blazers an NBA team and beginning in 2011 will host a major league soccer franchise which will be the continuation of the Portland Timbers. Skiing and snowboarding are also highly popular at Mount Hood and at year-round Timberland. Portland also has hundreds of bicycle events each year.
